Sir;...I don't disagree with your point as I understand it...The thing is, we cannot break relations with Iran more than they are broke...To get another divorce, we would have to get remarried, and we can't swallow that pill because it is as big as a manhole cover, and just as sweet...I will say that our reasons for our actions may be far different though the result may be the same... We had something to do with the revolt against the Russians in Eastern Europe, and no intention of getting involved... The object was purely cynical: to polarize Americans against unionism and communism, and justify the cold war indefinitly...With China, our leaders were happy to see a strong hand on the throat of liberty, and only wished their grip was better on our freedom... After that, the export of our jobs, and the import of their profit began wholesale... We find it easier to invest in tyranny than liberty... Liberty is a loose dog, and no one knows who it will bite, or when some one will shoot it...Well, we should encourage liberty in Iran in the only possible way that will not hurt us; and that is by keeping our mouths shut... If we pick sides we should bet on the Mullahs, because it would damage them more with the people, and may endear them to us... No matter what the goal of seeking power, inevitably, the power becomes the goal for itself...This is true for the theocracy as well as for the people...Scratch it, and you would see that the power structure is corrupt, but there is so much fear among the older generation of the U.S., and of our power, that we cannot now play the part of an honest man... We have to be divisive in such a fashion that empowers the opposition... We have to pat the powerful on the back until we find some fatal weakness which will allow a sharp blade into the heart... It is too late to play it straight...It is never too late to play it smart...Thanks...Sweeney

Okay, Mr. Buchanan, I have to give you credit for acknowledging our president's wisdom when many of your right wing comrades are stopping just short of calling on crazies to assassinate him. There is something else going on here that is probably too subtle for the ideologues to get. Have you noticed that China is joining in with Obama in calling for sanctions against North Korea? We are clearly there in Afghanistan and paying a hefty price for it, but Pakistan is doing most of the dirty work. Our new president is slowly pulling the U.S. out of its foreign policy isolation from the rest of the world, and in so doing is greatly leveraging our ability to effect real change instead of needless bloodshed and empty sabre rattling. Keep up with the healthy spine and good scholarship program!
