Oliver Stone, Lousy Historian
by L. Brent Bozell
Dear Oliver,
Many years ago, when Bill Maher's comedy show was hosted by Comedy Central and he was funny, his formula for success was truly unique. Every week two sets of political and/or cultural opposites were pitted against each other, and he refereed with humor. It was all designed for a good laugh and succeeded because once upon a time Bill Maher was truly funny.
Some producer really thought in extremes when they pitted Oliver Stone and Brent Bozell for one episode. I have ...

OK, clearly you don't feel Stone is qualified to make the assessment in question (that Reagan was a dumb son of a bitch). But, since he was merely agreeing with what he purports Nixon to have said, can you just address directly whether or not you believe Nixon to have truly said it? I'd be curious to know. Did Nixon, in fact, believe Reagan to be a dumb son of a bitch? Brent? Brent?

To disprove that Reagan was dumb you went to a bunch of former Reagan officials to find out what their opinion was? Shockingly, they disagreed and you've proven your point. Is this meant seriously or am I missing some kind of subtle mocking commentary of the partisanship of hack writers?

Reagan sold arms to Iran which was an extremely dumb thing to do. By his own account it wasn't until a year of investigation occurred that Reagan understood what his Iran policy had been. By his own account Reagan was too stupid to know what his own policies were.
Reagan's "economic success" was due to massive government borrowing on Reagan's part. For Reagan government was the answer....he tripled the debt which was a major economic stimulus.
Mr. Bozell is very confused about historical facts.

Re: Brent All the right-wing propagandists, such as Limbaugh and yourself, I've run across are very lousy historians. You guys ignore the obvious fact that Reagan asked for, and got, massive spending increases. Reagan didn't propose spending cuts that offset his requests for massive spending increases.
Would you care to acknowledge the obvious historical facts in this matter or do you prefer to go in for extreme spin and dishonesty?
The fact is that Reagan asked for, and got, massive spending increases and he didn't propose cuts to offset his massive spending. The fact is that Reagan's economic success was a result of his massive borrowing from the government.
