Of Generals and Victories

by Pat Buchanan

"(O)nce war is forced upon us, there is no other alternative than to apply every available means to bring it to a swift end.

"War's very object is victory, not prolonged indecision.

"In war there is no substitute for victory."

Familiar to every graduate of West Point, the words are from the farewell address of Gen. MacArthur, to Congress on April 19, 1951, after he was relieved of command in Korea by Harry Truman.

Two years later, however, Dwigh ...

Everything with the United States is about "winning." Even Mr. Buchanan's two most recent posts is all about "winning": "Of Generals and Victories" and "Can McCain Still Win"! This football mentality will end the U.S. Empire as surely as the current financial collapse will too. The questions that the "stupid people" of the U.S. need to ask is not if the wars of Iraq and Afghanistan are winnable, but what the f*cking hell are you doing there? In Afghanistan, are you there to secure a pipeline to Pakistan and the heroin trade? Remember those "evil" Taliban were able to reduce the heroin production to zero, but now the military boots of the U.S. Empire is there and it cannot stop the heroin trade?!? And Iraq, is it for the oil and petro dollars? The United States wages wars for occupation and imperialism and that is why these "wars" will never end except in complete defeat of the aggressors.

WHY ARE YOU SUPPORTING THIS CONSPIRACY THEORY ABOUT A NEW WORLD ORDER!!! I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY...LET ALONE THE REST OF THE WORLD WOULD ALLOW THE RICHEST PEOPLE ON THIS PLANET TO TAKE US ALL OVER AND HAVE ONE CURRENCY AND ONE BANK!!! THIS WILL MOST CERTAINLY START A WORLD WAR....BUT I GUESS THAT'S WHAT ALL YOU RICH PEOPLE WANT TO DO AWAY WITH THE MIDDLE CLASS AND THE POOR....JUST LIKE ALL YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING TO HAVE TO DO WAS GO AND PICK UP THE DEAD BODIES THAT WERE LEFT BEHIND AFTER HURRICANE KATRINA AND IKE ALL OF YOU CONSERVATIVES MAKE ME SICK....AND IF YOU GO TO CHURCH ON SUNDAY GOD AND JESUS WOULD, ARE AND WILL BE ASHAMED OF YOU ALL!!!!!

Sir;...You are a funny little man. You know your history, and yet make yourself the lap dog of the party that never learn anything from history. They learn nothing from the failure of Greek and Roman society. They learn nothing of the cost of Empire to Britain. What you are talking about here is easily expressed: The general no army can defeat is geography. Geography beat the English out of the colonies. Geography beat Napoleon in Russia. It beat Lee at Gettysburg. It beat Hitler. It beat the Japanese. It beat Macarthur in Korea, but it was not his war. He warned Kennedy out of Vietnam for the same reason. ...The bone headed idiots we call political and military leaders say we cannot go back. Neither can we stay. An army that has surrendered mobility to hold a piece of geography has made itself a foot note in history. It has beaten itself better than any enemy could have imagined possible. Frederick the Great said if you try to hold everywhere you hold no where. So; if you feel you must go in, go in, and get out. We made the mistake of defeating the Iraqi army. Big mistake, and one Sherman refused to make with Johnson. Why induce a guerilla war? But the big mistake is to stay, and make a target of the army. Choose your battle field. An army is mobile, and not only mobil; but mobility itself. Why sacrifice mobility?? Go in. Get out. We could have went in 20 times for the cost of staying once in both of these countries. In fact we will grow tired of no gain, and leave worse off than before. Which suits your republican party to a T. They look only for the political gain, and it does not matter how much they make the country into a dung hill if they can be the kings of it. So they make this problem and give it to the democrats. The democrats let the republicans off easy on the bailout, but no one wants the finger of fate pointing at them. This country can only stand so much terrible government. The republicans disagree. No! We have not reached the zeneth of bad goverrnment yet.. Time is another general no army can defeat. We need the commander in chief to be a general. We need the political arm to decide what is desirable, and we need for the military arm to tell what is possible. We cannot stampede into war... When right wing politics and neocon religious ideologues dominates the military colleges we cannot expect the best out of our army. The fact is that the military gives a first class education, but it is history which teaches the lessons. Too bad none of them seem to get it. Never give the enemy the choice of battle field. Never let events control you. Defend democracy, not geography. ...Thanks...Sweeney

Mr. Buchanan, maybe you should explain history and your theory to your man, McCain. I just heard him say that we will not lose the war with Iraq; under his watch, we will win the war and leave Iraq as victors. Hmmh, seems like a contradiction to what you're saying? McCain seems to still be smarting that he spent 5 years in a POW camp and we didn't win the war. The man's got an axe to grind. Maybe he thinks if he wasn't a POW but was actively involved for those 5 years he might have brought victory to our country? What you say about war and victory has been said by many vets and progressive and average American's. Our government with McCain on its coattails is still trying to fight and win wars using now antiquated means and methods. The surprise is that you know all you know yet bury your head in the sand by supporting those who espouse and practise the opposite viewpoint. Re: Sweeney, Sir, your postings continue to amaze, delight, and at times (but not this time) boggle me.

I wish it were as simple as Generals and Victories. What you did not mention in your article is that the wars of today and the politics of today all have religious connotations. The Jews, the Muslims, the Christians all with their own war playbook and we're supposed to choose a side. The Christian right has entered politics to create even more chaos. Didn't you once run for President? The Christian radio stations encourage people not to vote for a politician if they are pro choice or pro anything the Christian community feels is morally wrong. Doesn't matter their stand on anyother issue, nor how qualified they are. We speak of lobbyists as scum, yet the Christian right is constantly lobbying it's people to only vote into office those who are pro life. What? They want laws enacted on all of us to make abortion or birthcontrol, ad nauseum illegal. Seems since they can't get Christians to do the right thing, they'll only vote in politicians who hold to their beliefs and then lobby them to pass laws that meet the Christian goals. Where've I heard that before? Oh Yes, Iraq..only it's the Muslims that run that country and we've been told we are helping to free them from religious tyranny. .

Re: liz;...What I like is Mr. Mccain saying he knows how to win this war. REALLY? What war has he won??? I know how to win a war. Avoid it. Fight defensively when forced to...But, Mccain thought he could win Vietnam too. Does he believe that if he was George the King of Englaand that he could beat the Americans? I doubt it....He does not realize all that goes into winning a war, which is just a beginning to winning the peace. And that is the truly sad thing about the man, that he is so shallow,; all over the country and an inch deep. I don't know if Mr. Obama will be elected. I trust he has a better and more nimble mind. And Mrs. Palin; apart from being the Rocky Squirrel of that duo, she is also the darling of the reright because she is dogmatic, and an ideologue. She knows with the certainty of a fanatic, and does not need to think...Thanks....Sweeney
