Obama's "Gimmick"

by Mark Shields

Politicians of the losing party are always quick to find the "gimmick" a winning opponent has so obviously mastered that explains the winner's success with the voters.

When Franklin Roosevelt became the dominant political figure of the 20th century by winning the White House four times, his Republican opponents concluded that FDR's masterful fireside chats, broadcast to the nation, were the key to his success — his "gimmick." The GOP consoled itself with the m ...

I would like to thank Mark Shields for another insightful article. My comment is this: That Obama has bottled change. He has come to represent change in a country frustrated and desparate for change. As far as the fund raising goes, Yes; it is best done in the market place of ideas, and that is the internet. I think this is the greatest hope for change, that people seeking change recognize their numbers and take heart. Here is the problem: Everyone reaching for change comes up against the impediment of party, and the fact that no party can change, and every individual can be corrupted. The good thing for Mr. Obama is this fact, the only one I remember from a book on advertizing read 35 years ago. The more people pay for a product the less they will complain about it, even if it does not work as advertized. Some of those who have lost the most because of Mr. Bush are the last to complain about him. We don't want to be reminded of our mistakes, and do not remind ourselves. But as a country, our mistakes are increasingly coming home to roost. We live in one world, in one system with the world. Our economy seeking new frontiers finds the markets taken. Our armies start a war and deal with the refugees, and the aftermath forever. We exploit the third world, and the third world follows their wealth home. We did not buy the problems we are presented with, nor did we actually benefit. We bought the solution to our problems only to find the solutions created greater problems. So; if Mr. Obama is offering us change, those who paid his way may accept less than is advertized; but I think on a whole, we are becoming less and less enamoured of the American way, and all it represents. If there is one outstanding quality to the man, it is that he some times throws a bone to the conservatives. I think this is great because they want change as much as we. But change will require sweeping the parties into the trash bin, and facing our needs, like any individual problem, one at a time, and not all together as parties see them.
