Obama and McCain

Now that the two parties have finally selected their presidential candidates, it is time for a sober— if not grim— assessment of where we are.

Not since 1972 have we been presented with two such painfully inadequate candidates. When election day came that year, I could not bring myself to vote for either George McGovern or Richard Nixon. I stayed home.

T. Sowell your editorial today is so spot on. I haven't felt so impotent at the ballot since I had a choice between David Duke and Edwin Edwards for governor of LA. God help us all.-b

One of the major issues in the coming campaign must be one inquiry into the level of knowledge that each of the candidates has. Dr. Sowell could produce a series of as few as ten questions that would be available to the candidates. These questions would test their insights and instincts from capitalism to international relations. A challenge could be issued for a 30-40 minute observed conduct of the test (no fair getting answers from someone else). Dr. Sowell gets to read the answers and declare strengths and weaknesses of the test takers. Dr. Sowell gets to write a constructive series on the questions and the correct answers as well as the potential consequences of actions consistent with the candidate answers, as well as the likely implications of Dr. Sowell's position on the question.
