It's unusual for me to disagree with Ms. Harrop. However, if she researched more deeply she would find that the disastrous effect of NAFTA has been to push the current hordes of illegal immigrants northward, by undercutting the corn market that supported every little farm and town across south Mexico. The avocados, etc. are irrelevant. The rural economy is based on corn, and we pulled the plug on it. Now the Mexicans can't make a living growing corn, I can't make a living at carpentry, and my sons can't get a job landscaping. Disastrous, unless all you care about is cheap slave labor.

While I agree that NAFTA was not the only "boogy man" it was the beginning of what most Ohioans see as a dysfunctional series of agreements that are unfair in its treatment of workers. These agreements are a race to the bottom that all but the United States Chamber of Commerce realize. We midwesterners know the score and maybe this doesn't affect YOU but the rest of middle America it does!
