Memories of the McCain That Was

by Froma Harrop

Too bad there's no time-traveling on Election Day. The more moderate John McCain of eight years ago would make a very attractive candidate, and Barack Obama eight years from now could offer an impressive track record.

Of course, we can time-travel in our heads. And that ability accounts for polls showing a tight race in a year when the Democrat should be surfing double-digit margins.

We know what McCain was like in 2000, when he ran for president with a fresh maverick message. T ...

Dear Froma: I read your article today and was truly upset. Not, as you might think, by the comments about McCain, but two little statements you made that truly defines liberal ignorance. About taxes you stated the government should increase taxes on the rich because they 'should pay more'. In that light, I would request the government take 50% of your college degree credits from you because you apparently are VERY GOOD at what you do and give it to those of us who made bad choices in our youth and did not finish college. Since it is easy for you to earn more credits and it is hard for a poor slob like me, since I really don't want to go back anyway, you should have no problem "sharing" your wealth with poor ol' me and others like me. I'm sure you wouldn't mind working a little harder to get me those credits to graduate since it's obvious you didn't earn your credits with hard work but because you inherited your brains from your parents. Anyway, you 'should' give me those credits because you 'are' more learned than I and it is only right to share YOUR wealth with those of us who are crushed under the weight of the educational system that did not do it's job at the time I needed it. Also, if I interpreted your comments properly on Social Security, you chastised McCain for using Social Security and disgrace within 1 hour of each other because "that's the way Social Security is." Well, it's apparent that in the Journalism Curriculum they didn't teach history. Social Security was NEVER meant to be a full-fledged retirement program. It was designed to ALLOW citizens to VOLUNTARILY contribute no more than 1% of their wage to a government fund that was to specifically be kept OUT OF THE GENERAL FUND. It was the Democrats in Congress that saw a way to buy votes and made this "voluntary" program into another tax on the people. Then it was a liberal President who approved allowing Congress to borrow from that fund. So, yes it is a disgrace, that the liberals had a 40 year control of Congress and put this country into the tax & spend arena we now see. I don't necessarily like McCain, but if he will tell Congress they can only spend what the bring in like we have to do, he has my vote. P.S. Let me know when I should remove your diplomas fro your walls and pick up my credits. I'm lloking forward to getting a free ride from a Liberal for a change. sincerely, Carl
