When they write their retrospectives about the era that ended with the 2008 election, economic historians will undoubtedly credit George W. Bush with almost single-handedly moving the country to embrace extremist conservatism. It's a simple storyline: Cowboy president drives bewildered American herd over laissez-faire cliff. What such reductionism will ignore, though, is what we must remember now: Namely, that Congress also played a decisive role in the stampede.

Sir- Thank-you for describing in precise detail the complete dishonesty of the Ruling Elite. "Discredited tax breaks" ?What about defining tax "breaks" for what they really are- the favouring of one class of entities at the expense of the taxpayer. As far as President Bush having been a conservative- under what logic could his adminisration have been possibly deemed conservative, unless it was to the status quo. And finally, if you think Americans in the majority are "progressive", please look at the results of an opinion poll by the Baltimore Sun on true public opinion about the "stimulus' farce- well in excess of 90% of the respondents are against this expenditure.
