I appreciate your message about teaching our children to live in the world. When I heard the news about Somer I was also very saddened, and of course had the momentary self doubt about whether I am underestimating the danger my children could face while walking home from school.
But then I let my rational mind think about just how unusual this case is, which is why it is such big news.
In fact, I wonder if the risk of being in a car accident during a drive to or from school would be higher than the risk of abduction on the walk or ride home.
My children's schools have seemed to be surprised that I would let my 2nd graders walk (less than 3/4 mile in one case, about 2 blocks in another case, with not any big roads or intersections on the way). For a lot of children who never get practice with their parents walking or biking places and learning how to safely navigate cross walks and bike lanes, I guess it could be a dangerous event for the child to walk to or from school. I feel sad for those children who are missing out on the fresh air, exercise, and self confidence of getting themselves to and from school.
Thanks again for your messages about balancing our parental fears with our desires to raise self-reliant capable children.
