Lessons From the Bailout

by Walter E. Williams

In my more cynical moments, I think that we Americans deserve what we get from our politicians, many of whom can be generally described as nothing less than loathsome. You say, "Williams, that's a pretty heavy putdown." My question to you is how else would you describe these congressmen who are now blaming the financial mess on the failure of the free market? Starting with the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977, that was given more teeth during the Clinton administration, Congress s ...

Walter Williams, I enjoy your article in my paper, (THE DAILEY HOME). You are right on with your comments about BIG BAILOUTS & COOKED BOOKS. For years I have tried to tell all that would listen there is no black and white problems as far as people are concerned." IT'S A GREEN THING". Media keeps the middle class stirred up, all the while they are in deeper and deeper in all of our hip pockets.(guess who owns the media, THE RICH). I do not remember who made the qoute ( it's the economy stupid), well this time it ain't the economy, it's the oil buddies of Mr. Bush, that are killing this world, I hope they sleep well at night. I feel it is eronic that all this paper wealth that these "Oil Men" are stockpiling is now dwindiling away. GOD BLESS Barron Hill P.O.Box 232 Sycamore, Al. 35149 1-256-249-2071

I find your Republican slanted article interesting but the people you said would never make loans like Fredie and Fanny just lost their butts and banks are failing, left and right. In this case I feel your opinions are somewhat lacking and short sighted. Maybe you should try clearing up this mess and quote a FEW Hard headed Republicans also. Buy the way I am an Independant.

Attention: Walter E. Williams Regarding: Congress has itself to blame .. 10/7/2008 My wife and I love your column and agree in most instances with your well-researched opinions. We are particularly interested in your quest to bring to justic all congressional culprits ASAP who are remotely associated with the bailout debacle. We would like to start a crusade for reform and feel you are just the man for that task. Here are four that are dear to us: 1. Implement term limits immediately. 2. Combine congressional Social Security/Medicare monies with current SS/Medicare programs for regular American retirees and adjust congressional payments to same scale as regular American retirees. (As Joe Biden stated, "It's patriotic!") 3. Congressional salary increases and benefits must be voted on by the people. (Have you every heard of a business that allows their employees to determine their own salary and benefits?) 4, Immediate termination of a congresssional employee and suspension of salary and benefits when convicted of an ethics violation. Think you can help?
