Law vs. Moral Values

by Walter E. Williams

A civilized society's first line of defense is not the law, police and courts but customs, traditions and moral values. Behavioral norms, mostly transmitted by example, word of mouth and religious teachings, represent a body of wisdom distilled over the ages through experience and trial and error. They include important thou-shalt-nots such as shalt not murder, shalt not steal, shalt not lie and cheat, but they also include all those courtesies one might call ladylike and gentlemanly conduct. ...

Wow! Did you ever hit the nail on the head with this article. I lived thru the same times and experienced the same things you expressed in the article. The beliefs and values we learn from family teachings/customs and religion cannot be duplicated by laws. The bigger question is what do we do to start reversing the trend that we have seen happening for the past several decades? Your views on this would be much appreciated. Re: Shirley, I also like the way you think.

Sir;... You might do well to read a good history of Western Law, such as Law and Revolution, by Berman... If you did, you would find that we have only had law in its present form for about a thousand years, and in that time law has served to break down communities wherever it has spread... And Law has also given cover to wealth and property, and that great destroyer: Greed... It is one thing to talk about desent from God as the cause of morality.. The fact is that community is morality, and when communities are destroyed there is no one to teach morality..The other essential quality to morality is freedom because only by choice are people free or moral... But deny that freedom as all religions do, and you have only as much morality as can be enforced by law...I will admit that churches provide a community, and that, as always, people sacrifice for their communities...But just as in the past, communities unite as much as they divide... And before wide spread law, when the people were the law, then communities policed their own, and guarded their own... What made men moral was not God, but human honor...Outside of ones community every man was on his honor, so that it the exercise of freedom did not bring insult or injury to the whole community...But where are our communities??? Where is group responsibility??? I mean, they still hold every black person responsible for the crimes of a few, but there is no black community control over its members...Law would not allow it...So why should anyone care for their community when it is law that is the force; and its only influence is coersion....Thanks...Sweeney

"The failure to fully transmit values and traditions to subsequent generations represents one of the failings of the so-called greatest generation." You are so right Walter. Since the basis for all law and moral codes is the fact that we humans are not (as the Godless left claims) just another animal, but higher beings (made in God's image) we therefore have responsiblities to behave in certain fashions and care for each other. Without God, there is simply no reason for man to do good -in fact, without God and a hereafter, he must reduce himself to mere animal and take what he can from others whenever and wherever, and however, he can get away with it. If you take a look around at what Godless liberalism has wrought upon this wayward nation, you'll see exactly that.

Thank you, Walter Williams! It's a disgrace what's going on in todays world. All these non-profit organizations, receiving Taxpayers' money, and doing nothing for the illegitimates having more illegitimates but creating terror on American soil! There was an article, not long ago, titled 'Schools get Taxpayers Money for "Character Building"!' Character, morals, respect, honesty will never happen, as long as people continue to think they're 'ENTITLED' to everything without working for it! According to my dictionary 'Character is Good Moral Quality and a Hereditary Characteristic!" Building character starts the day a child is conceived and all the money in the world cannot change this! Believe me, this isn't the Taxpayers' fault! All these social and welfare programs have backfired! Too bad, it's gone on for five decades and no one noticed until now? "It's better late than never" as the old saying goes, right? "How could anyone be so ignorant (if politicians weren't getting paid big bucks) as to think that "illegitimates having more illegitimates", living off Taxpayers money, and not having any responsibility for themselves, would create a good community, good jobs, good schools, or anything else? Government must be held accountable for giving Taxpayers monies to anyone or any program! In todays' world, since politicians create Nafta and Cafta, selling Americans out, taking all the good manufacturing jobs and shipping them overseas, maybe it's time to sell these politicians a one-way ticket to the countries they've sold America to, with no return to America, as they've borrowed trillions, without Taxpayers' consent, and as the old saying goes "There ain't no more money, so anti-up your assets to pay off the debt load you created and you're free to leave America!"
