I very much enjoy reading your columns. You are so often right to the point on any issue you tackle. Your column about the unscrupulous lenders struck a chord today. I live in Arizona, which is a challenge on so many levels. I was born, raised, and raised my family in the Metro Chicago area. We have lived in a few other places, but this has been the strangest experience. I feel like I live in a third world state, seriously. Below is a letter to the editor that I am sending in. Of course it won't get published, but I will have gotten it out of my system. We moved here thinking that the diverse culture would be exciting and adventurous. Instead, it has been a huge disappointment. We have also lived in Santa Fe - they do not seem to have the same problems - what a surprise!
Keep writing!! There are a few of us who do read your columns.
"As usual, on Sunday my husband and I have a leisurely morning, drinking coffee and reading the Sunday Arizona Republic. This Sunday, February 22, 2009, I was struck, but not surprised, by the column by Froma Harrop in the “Viewpoints” section. She wrote about how the real story of the foreclosure problem was with the unscrupulous lenders who saw pay dirt in the unsuspecting Latino community. They were told they could afford to own a home, but weren't necessarily educated enough to understand the terms of the loan. Further, those same lenders passed off sub-prime loans to persons, Latino, Anglo and African American, who would have qualified for mainstream loans.
I point this out because I also actually read the daily paper. The number of letters complaining about the housing bailout and how come they have to help irresponsible home buyers is somehow unfair to them, is overwhelming. I am not that old, but I always thought we lived in a country that helped those who were in need, on any level. Especially here in Arizona, I see so much anger and enmity toward those in need, it makes me beyond angry. And the crowd of “What's in it for me?”, grows exponentially each day. Letter after letter complains of things here – politics, services, speed cameras/no speed cameras, “NIMBY” issues. The list is endless.
So, I have an idea. CAN WE ALL JUST GROW UP? I have lived in a few places, but this place, Arizona, takes the cake for selfishness, greed, and, bottom line, racism. We're 49th in education ranking – are you proud of that? Unlike other border states, we seem to be unable to get a handle on any kind of rational solution. We encourage developers to go crazy and then gripe about the blight that surrounds us. Then, we blame the people who were duped by crooks, and complain that “we” will have to help pay their mortgages, because they went out and bought SUVs and what not. Seriously…??
As President Obama said, during his campaign, “Enough!”
