Joe Kennedy, Hugo Chavez and That Free Heating Oil

by Mona Charen

You've probably seen the TV commercials — former congressman Joseph P. Kennedy II beckons you to enjoy reduced-price heating oil if you are struggling to keep your house warm, thanks to "our good friends in Venezuela." He then offers a few heartwarming examples of poor people who have taken advantage of the program and offers the toll free number: 1-877-JOE-4-OIL (1-877-563-4645).

So what if Joe Kennedy and Hugo Chavez get a propaganda bonanza, you may say, so long as p ...

I read this article with interest and I'm curious about the date and timing of the TV commerial. What is the date of the commercial, I found that an important missing piece?

Oh please. Our own government has recently rehabilitated the government of Libiya...so their oil is fine. The same goes for the oil from Russia, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States. We get oil from repressive regimes but its ok so long as we pay retail. Why is it ok to buy your gas at CITGO which is owned by the Venezuelan government? Only discounted oil is somehow off limits. You want Joe Kennedy to get cheap oil form some other source? Well write an article about greedy Exxon allowing Americans to freeze. If you're cold, who cares about the politics of Venezuela.

Ms. Charen, While I don't deny any of the things that you've said about Chavez, and I find it despicable that Kennedy is doing this without researching, I would like to point out that president goerge bush has done many, if not all, of those same things here in America.

Mona Charen is a complete moron. The verbal contortions she undertakes to demonize Hugo Chavez are laughable. She ends up looking like a pretzel, and her charges against him, considered carefully, apply more to George W. Bush than to Chavez. Accusations like "would-be dictator" bring to mind the current occupant of the White House and his pathetic cronies more than they do President Chavez, who at least was elected repeatedly by popular vote, which is more than she can claim of Shrub. And Chavez has truly done more to help the poor of his country than the Bush administration ever dreamed of doing. Michael Moore could have easilly included a portrait of medical care extended democratically and equitably in Venezuela in his "Sicko" documentary, in contrast to the sad, crumbling patchwork that passes for helath care in this country, thanks to Bush's complete inattention to it.
