TO: Editor, Salem, Oregon Statesman Journal Newspaper. Column dated 4 July, 2009, page 6c Dear Sir/Madam; I can only presume that you periodically print a commentary by Austin Bay out of a sense of fairness. Your need is to allow those who are always wrong to have a voice also. I commend your dedication to equality. Sadly, Mr. Bay still thinks the simple-minded Bush/Cheney "You're either with us or against us", mind set works in a complex world as exampled in today's Iran. What Bay called the "apologist's route" I call the "We are willing to explore common ground if you are; route". The latter is the path of a clear thinking, careful diplomat as compared to the Bush regime's "bomb them all" approach. There are two advantages this current approach. First, the leadership of belligerent, Bush/Cheney-like regimes in other countries is less able to use the United States as a lurking evil ready to inflict destruction on the dictator's country. The classic unifier for dictators is an external threat making threatening noises. Our earlier shrill repetition of a need to bomb Iran played easily into Iranian President Ahmadinijad's rhetoric about the evil America. Second, the rational approach makes it clear to the moderate forces in the dictator's country that we are willing to work with them if they are able to gain more control in their own country. It would be insane to suggest that we will get involved in the internal struggle for power (as George Bush the first did when he urged the disaffected Iraqi's to rebel then abandoned them to be brutally crushed by Saddam after Gulf War I). Such an approach to those not friendly with us will at minimum allow the moderate forces within our adversary's countries to know that we are not their country's eternal enemy and that we will be there when they are ready to interact. Bay says that Obama is on the wrong side of history. I say just the opposite. Austin Bay is so far into the wrong side of history that he cannot even see the dividing line. His attachment to that disaster known as the Bush/Cheney regime and its methodology makes that pretty clear since all he can do is advocate for more of that outdated and limited thinking.
