Escalate First, Think Later

Excuse me for being impolitic, but why the —— is America "surging" so unquestioningly into Afghanistan?
Not for nothing is that country called "the burial ground of empires," "a guerilla's paradise" and "the theme park of problems." Yet, President Obama insists that America must act now to "stabilize" Afghanistan and its dizzyingly disparate, ethnically fractious, heavily armed tribal factions.

Re: James A, Sweeney: I think both of you are underestimating Mr. Obama a tad. He doesn't need to read your comments to understand what's going on here. He's looking for a graceful and controlled way out, just as he is in Iraq. Upheaval destroys lives in ways too numerous to count, which is something W. never bothered to give a hoot about as he effortlessly sentenced Iraq to carnage and what will turn out to be decades of protracted misery. Thanks to his shameful legacy we are stuck in a situation where we can't just take our toys and go home and leave these places in a vacuum. As you know, a vacuum is something nature abhors, and right in line behind nature is civilization. Cheers, Mr. Sweeney, keep giving em hell. Masako

Sir;...Hitting them where they ain't is a good strategy for baseball; but it is a hard way to win a war... There is a whole lot of ain't in that country, and a lot of up and down as well... Here is the deal... What we are good at is invasion... We are irresistable... But holding ground is the most expensive and dangerous activity any army can engage in.... It is like highschool wrestling... If you get two points for a take down, and they get one point for an escape; take them down and let them up till the match is over -if you are good at take downs... We should never have stayed... Supporting corrupt governments is a waste of money... Beat them up, and take a hike; and beat them up and take a hike, and keep doing it till they get tired of playing, and we can make a deal... We should always have said we were leaving at the first opportunity... And then we should have left at the first opportunity... We need to let them form up so we know who to fight... Chasing them into a wider war in Pakistan is not in our interest... Now when we go, it will be with our tails between our legs...Why??? All to admit we cannot beat reality???? All to admit we cannot beat geography??? All to admit we cannot beat Islam???This enemy could do nothing to us if we did not present such a big target... And we always present a broad side... We want to act big.... Now we find we are too poor to act big...It is time to act smart... And Judging from our military; it will be an act...Thanks...Sweeney
