Democracy and Majority Rule

by Walter E. Williams

Democracy and majority rule give an aura of legitimacy to acts that would otherwise be deemed tyranny. Think about it. How many decisions in our day-to-day lives would we like to be made through majority rule or the democratic process? Professor Williams makes a passing remark about half-gallon toilets, but they are a great example of tyranny by the do-the-right-thing class. I live (alone) on six acres of land. I get my water from a well and return what I've used to a septic tank. I would impinge on no one else's water even if I had a 10-gallon flush toilet, but I'd have to drive to Canada or Mexico to get one, and then smuggle it across. Toilets don't lend themselves well to smuggling. To cut the grass that covers these six acres, I use a lawn tractor with a 60-inch blade. Because I cut a 5-foot swath with every run, I use a lot less gas and produce less "carbon" than I would with an 18-inch blade. If saving fuel and spouting less carbon is a good idea, like saving water, why don't we impose a minimum width of 60 inches on all lawnmovers? If its the right thing to do, why isn't it the law?
