Cash for clunkers is a great! Actually, it doesn't go far enough. I think they should double the rebates, apply it to any upgrade that gets better gas mileage, and never stop the program. I mean, if a little is good, then more is better, right? Hey, I want money for my new car too - why should only those who bought gas guzzlers be rewarded? And as long as we're giving away free money, how about a rebate on obsolete atlases to save my job? This is exactly what we need more of - money for nothing! (...Now if they would only throw in some chick for free).
As for helping the environment, I heard that gas lawn mowers spew pollution many times worse than a car. If true, then the 1/2 hour it takes me to cut my grass pollutes more than the 5 hours I spend commuting each week. How about a rebate to trade in gas lawn mowers for electric ones? More effective AND cost effective. ...And quieter too.

I traded in an old Durango that needed $2200 in transmission repairs for a new Honda Fit. For me, it was a sweet deal. I saved the money on repair, so it was a "gift" of $4,500 to me. Plus the dealer scrapped the Durango for me!

It's economic lunacy, however. Why should the taxpayers borrow $4,500 from China to give me to destroy a usable vehicle? How does my buying a Japanese car (made in Japan) help the taxpayers repay the $4,500 borrowed from the Chinese?

What this program really did was borrow $4,500 from future generations and then send it to Japan to help out the Japanese auto workers. It does contributes no efficiency or productivity to the U.S. economy to make it possible or even easier to repay the $4,500. As for impact on the U.S. economy, what about the transmission place that lost $2,200 in business?

And why stop with cars? Why doesn't Obama borrow money from the Chinese to pay me to trade in my old TV? My old couch? My old shirts and tennis shoes?

Anyone who supports this program is ignorant of basic economics. I strongly oppose the program, even though I benefited from it. The only thing dumber than supporting such a stupid government program would be not taking advantage of it. But this is a very short-term, selfish approach that is not in the best interests of the country.
