I see a lot of anguish over political correctness, which I view as pressure to be sensitive to the impact that our words or actions can have on others. I don't see much anguish over the issue of banning books, which I find quite abhorrent. There can be good reasons that a particular book might not be appropriate, but a few objections should not be enough to cow a library, a whole school district, or even one teacher to ban a book.

The notion that you can yell and scream and intimidate others seems to be gaining ground. I would prefer a rational exchange of ideas and an accommodation that addresses legitimate concerns ad preserves important civic principles.

Unfortunately, we have reached a point in society that radical thinkers have gained noteriety and profit from it at the expense of the free flow of ideas.
