Another excellent Paul Craig Roberts article. There must be a way to address the internal conflict of business seeking profit by outsourcing jobs and those same businesses' expectation of selling their foreign-made products here in a service economy of minimum wage workers. I say bring back tariffs.

This sounds great. But, what effect will tarriffs have on the value of the dollar?
What manufactured goods can we export? We mostly export agricultural products and technology. There are many areas of the world that will be more competitive, like Chile. So what do we sell to the rest of the world?

What will this policy do to domestic prices and the cost of living? We are at risk of massive inflation also.

How will this lead to new jobs here?

Too many unanswered questions for me. Maybe you can go back and take some economics classes

We prospered tremendously for the first 210+ years of our nation's history with tariffs in place. Why do you think we wouldn't continue to do so? Do you forget we are still the world's largest and wealthiest market? And you need to question how keeping manufacturing in this country would lead to jobs? F**k the "global economy"- that is all manufactured crap (no pun intended) for the benefit of the ownership class, or do you believe that the trade imbalances and McJobs we have are good for the economy and good for Americans? Talk about needing economics classes...

Think of the people of this country as a series of many concentric circles with the poorest lowest skilled jobs being the ones on the outside and being wealthier as they near the center. What has been happening for the last 25 years and speeding up all the time is the elimination of those outer circles thus exposing the next layer to elimination. If the concept of low price dominating all economic decisions always wins out, then you, I and most of us will lose our jobs and standard of living. Americans can make any product sold in this world, "our" corporations simply have to settle for smaller profits and think about their national responnsibilities; many working class Americans have lost their lives defending this country and who has benefitted the most and had as little personal loss in so doing than the corporate heads and their families? I'm thinking you know nothing of the America of the 60's and 70's; the present situation is an abnormality and can be turned around. As the world's only super power, we can do much to raise the world's standard of living by exporting not just the idea of profits but also workers rights and environmental protections, or do you want Communist China with it's atrocious record on human rights and environmental degradation to be the model to aspire to?
