In 1967 my brother at age 19 was drafted and he actually went since my World War II parents would of expected any else, it was a responsibility. My father after years in WWII was called back in 1951 and actually went back. Out of guilt I joined the Reserves at age 34 and served nearly twenty years till called up for the war in Iraq. I answered the back door draft as it was called.
You guys with an opinion got it all wrong, we know the militray is screwed up and the leadership can be full of baloney at times. However, it is about being part of something greater than self, a responsibility to serve the nation if capable. You make an obligation and you see it through. I know military service means nothing for many americans, states even want to end war veteran preference for government jobs? Politicans sons and daughter often get safe military assignments if deployed.
None of tha matters, I served with heroes and still to this day being quarter master, I avoid wearing my uniform in public fearing praise I do not deserve since I was not in combat or wounded. I am happy I got to serve, I know even my government doesn't care. My father who passed away would of been proud of me now that matters do you understand. Even the General can not understand the little guy does it not for glory, but duty and good citizenship.
