Dear Mona,
I am not particularly knowledgeable about Canadian Health Care, but as a dual citizen of the US and Australia I am familiar with one "single payer" health care system. Australia's system works very well (not perfectly, but well). It combines universal health care (Medicare) with optional private insurance. Everyone pays about 1.5% of his income as a Medicare Levy. Private insurance gets a person into more plus hospitals (although the public hospitals are OK) and eliminates a queue for optional surgery. Many people have private insurance. My wife and I pay about $3000 for the Private Insurance per year. Medicare does not pay any dental expenses; our private health insurance covers about 50% of dental. I could give you more details but that is the rough outline of the plan. As you would expect, some people whinge but having been in both systems I find Australia's preferable and much cheaper.
Best regards,
R Gray

So Jane Fonda was quoted as saying, "When I'm in Canada, I feel that this is the way the whole world should operate"? For me, that's reason enough NOT to emulate anything Canadian, whether it's health care or hockey rules.
