The position you take now is not fundamentally different from that of those who opposed the federal government back then. We sent federal troops into the south to take care of the problem back then. You just don't leave some issues up to the mob. That's why we've progressed over the millennia from living in caves to generally living in dwellings with plumbing, electricity, etc. It's called "civilization".
