Victoria's Secret Isn't Sexy; It's Raunchy

by Lenore Skenazy

You walk into Victoria's Secret, and the music is blaring, the décor is Bordello Barbie, and you find yourself caught up in a whirlwind of G-strings. Some are frilly, some silly, some are cotton-candy pink covered with red lipstick kisses, and a customer says, "What I like about the store is that the stuff isn't trashy."

It isn't?

I'm trying to think of something trashier than Victoria's Secret, and all I can come up with is a preteen pole-dancing class at the Y ...

Ma'am; this is just a guess: I think VS is doing the same thing as every other business in America, and that includes the Government. They are trying to sell less for more, and they seem to be getting away with it. On the other hand, you have to run the risk that when you minimize the clothes you may super size the girl. And that is not so bad, as there are some men who look to a woman for heat in the winter, and shade in the summer. Clearly, some women, who for want of a living wage are wasting their lives working, might, if they put on VS clothing find about any one to pay them to put some real clothes on top. Think of it: undressing could become the key to addressing income inequality. Instead of starving fully clothed, women could insist upon starving naked, and showing their ribs and starchbloated bellys, actually make a point that is too easy to ignore when wrapped in rags. May even work for kids. It is too bad people can't turn their indignation right side out. It could bring about some changes.

I don't shop at Victoria's Secret stores, so I had no idea they'd become so tacky and obvious. You want to buy your fancy lingerie somewhere a little less "icky"? Try Frederick's of Hollywood!

Dear Lenore, You nailed it. Victoria's Secret is exactly as you describe it. My teenage daughters insist VS has the best bras on the market so they patronize the store but I make them spend their own money there. I tell them I'm not giving my money to a business such as VS which contributes to the moral decline of our culture. Can you just see their eyes roll at this last statement? If I am at the mall with them (they are usually with friends' mothers), I wait ouside the doors of the "bordello" because being inside the store turns my stomach. Carry on. Cindy W.

Dear Lenore, i feel as if you are too ugly to get into anything from victorias secret, the picture of you on the side would make some people go blind, the reason you are so upset about the way their "nauthgy nothings" look is because you cant seem to look at yourself in the mirror with them on. i have never had anything from them tear up like they would from the stores you buy you bras and panties from(target MAYBE), they are really BEST AT BRAS, maybe if you would get your 5 year old mind out of the gutter you would get out of the their SEXY LITTLE THINGS sections and see their bras are the most comfortable and best quailty. you would figure when you walk in a room and the pink neon lights are glowing SEXY LITTLE THINGS you would figure what would be in that room. and about the patinas have you EVER been in macy's or dillards, moron they all look like that! oh and the "french maid" outfit if you were to ask, they cant seem to keep that thing in the stores and online they are back ordered! idiot instead of writing about victoria's secret, write about the people like you and how cosmetic surgery and lipo would do you some good!

Dear Lenore, "Garter belts and see-through teddies?" Oh no! What has this country come to? Has Victoria's Secret sold its soul to the Devil? Is it contributing to "the moral decline of our culture" (as the previous commentator writes with such fervor)? I think not. VS is simply catering to the tastes of yes, mostly men, whose significant others are not shy about wearing sexually provocative underwear. I don't think it's "icky," or "trashy." Nor, apparently, do most of VS's customers, who are overwhelmingly female. Not to lose perspective of what we're discussing, this is UNDERwear. If a couple's comfort level for bedroom attire includes one or both partners dressing provocatively, how is that "pathetic"? VS is in the business of making couples happier. Hats off to them.
