Junk on eBay: The first item ever sold on eBay was a broken laser pointer, which sold for $14.83. Astonished, Pierre Omidyar wanted to make sure the winning bidder knew the pointer was broken, and was in turn told, "I'm a collector of broken laser pointers." It is not true, though, that the site was founded to sell the Pez collection of Omidyar's fiancee. That's just PR fluff.
