Flying the Flag: This is probably the Cousin Oliver of American holidays, not least of which because it isn't an official holiday. For a while, Flag Day was a state holiday in Pennsylvania, since local girl Betsy Ross was credited with inventing the flag. Except that she didn't. It was probably designed by Francis Hopkinson, who was New Jersey's delegate to the Second Continental Congress, which officially adopted the flag on June 14, 1777.
