State No. 51: The United States nearly had a 51st state that would have been dominated by Indians, particularly those Indians who had been forced out of their home territories and relocated to eastern Oklahoma. This is where the proposed state of Sequoyah would have been. It would have been named for Sequoyah, who developed the Cherokee alphabet (technically, it's a syllabary). Three genera of redwoods are also named for him.
