Wedding Bell Blues

by Margo Howard

Dear Margo: Longtime reader, first-time writer. Now I have a specific question for you. I am getting married to a wonderful man, and I am tied in a knot about tying the knot. We are both close to our large extended families, but neither of us wants a big, giant, out-of-this-world white wedding. Our choice is just a quiet church wedding with only immediate family. Your advice to "Wavering" is correct! Her mom is trying to guilt trip her. That's the way of it in some families, one will be singled out as "it." If "Wavering" and her boyfriend can find somewhere else to live, the sooner the better, before her mom finally guilt trips her into dropping out of school, quitting her job and breaking up with her boyfriend to be at her beck and call 24/7.

I'm new to this site and am actually responding to SEARCHING FOR WAY OUT read in the May6th issue of the Boston Globe. I agree with Margo. Growing up in a similar family and now being 67 with 4 children and 7 grandchildren I want the writer to know that I have my 92 yo Mom living with me and am working to relieve myself of my anger toward her for NOT leaving my father who died 20 yrs ago. We lived a stressfull, abusive life in a beautiful home and my Dad told her he would kill her if she ever left. Would we have been better off being poorer in peace? I think so!
