Happy 50th anniversary to the LEGO brand of children's blocks, which were first patented in 1958. The company's Danish-born founder, Ole Kirk Christiansen, was a carpenter who started making wooden toys circa 1932, after losing his job during the Depression. As mentioned in a 1999 episode of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," "LEGO" is derived from the Danish for "play well."
