Talk About a Makeover!

by Margo Howard

Dear Margo: I am currently married to a wonderful woman (together three years, married one). Recently she met a woman, and all of a sudden my wife is getting text messages and phone calls, and is staying over at her place. Some of my friends have told me there are rumors that my wife was thrown out of a pub for kissing this woman in the toilets. Other friends have noticed suspicious body language. My wife tells me there is nothing going on. We are close to breaking up over this woman. I have ...

I would like to share a thought on the letter from "Happy In My Own Beliefs." Her sister-in-law may be dim, but she's also showing a complete lack of respect for her family (and probably everyone else, too!) by continuing to harp at them about religion. It won't matter how many times people tell, or ask, her to quit, she's not going to do it. I also have a relative who's obsessed about the military in general and the civil war -- so much so that these are unwelcome subjects in my home, has been for years. Yes, I've made my feelings quite plain many times. Has it entirely stopped? No, and never will. I hope I'm wrong, but I can't help but wonder if he does it just to get on my nerves.

I love the answer to "Happy in my Own Beliefs." I have the same problem, only with my m-i-l. I am Jewish, and she is Pentecostal Christian. I've been to her house three times. This past Thanksgiving, she told me that Easter is the best half of Passover (the nerve! It still offends me!), and that Jesus celebrated Passover, so...what was it she said? Since Jesus celebrated Passover, she, as a Christian, had the authority to deam it a useless, dead holiday. That's what she said. Then, this past Christmas, she demanded I celebrate Christmas in MY home with Advent candles and a tree. And then his sister had the nerve to tell me Christmas isn't a Christian holiday. Tell that to China, is what I wanted to say, but I told her she was clearly mistaken if she thought a holiday with the word Christ in it wasn't Christian. hhh I'll have to remember your answer to poor "Happy," though, and use it if I ever go back to my m-i-l's house. I don't know why I can't just walk away (aside from it being a very small holiday), other than I've been hurt the worst by the Christians in this world.

*aside from it being a very small family That's what I meant to write, not "aside from it being a very small holiday."
