If he makes more than her, they should not split their costs 50/50. When my husband and I moved in together, we split the rent 50/50 and I paid my own bills that I had before we moved in, but He bought most of the groceries and paid most of the utilities or I wouldnt have had a dime left over at the end of the month. If they continue to split the costs 50/50 and he makes more money than her, then he should likely make sure that most of the difference goes into their retirement. If she's bad with money she's unlikely to be the one saving for their future.
