Intense Child Needs Help

Q. I have an 8-year-old son who's very intelligent. He has a remarkable memory and gets very good grades. Overall, he's a good kid, but at times when he gets upset, he explodes. This happens about three or four times a week. It can be about something as simple as cleaning up the dishes or his 4-year-old sister hanging on him and wanting to play. I wish to comment on this for one reason. This 8-year old sounds incredibly similar to my younger brother. He suffered very similar explosive episodes where every small little thing was reacted to as if it was the worst thing that ever happened to him, and he also would sometimes express that he wished he were never born, or that someone ought to just kill him. He was diagnosed with a disorder known as IED (Intermittent Explosive Disorder), but only after going through several psychiatrists who constantly focused on anger management and schizophrenia. I'm not saying that's necessarily what your child has, but it's definitely something that should be brought up.
