Hey, Buddy, Put Your Clothes On

by Margo Howard

Dear Margo: I have been dating a man for a year. He's been divorced for two years. He has a daughter who will be turning 7 in about four months. Let's go for a Biblical perspective on the "tattoo" letter. In 1 Corinthians 7:4, we read, "The wife's body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband's body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife." Ironically, today there is a reprint of an old letter from Ann Landers in which she quotes Genesis 2:24, "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh." The husband and wife are no longer two separate entities, but one; each belongs to the other. This means that each has a say in what goes on in the other's life, even a personal decision like getting a tattoo. If the husband is dead-set against it, then his wife should comply with his wishes...as he's going to have to see the revolting thing every time she gets out of the shower or climbs into bed with her. While the Bible does not specifically say anything against tattoos themselves (that I am aware of), you can see that it says plenty about husbands and wives making decisions which displease the other.
