Fearful Child Needs Evaluation

by Dr. Sylvia Rimm

Q. We're having a difficult time with our 8-year-old daughter. She's very emotional and is unable to let things go. Last week, she had some issues with her asthma and was continually telling us she couldn't catch her breath. We even had to pick her up at a sleepover. Asthma can be very scary. When my son was 5 he came into our room at 4 am gasping "Take me to a doctor, I can't breathe. I think I am going to die". That woke me up instantly and I got him to the ER. He was treated immediatelty, and kept a full 24 hours for observation. He never again had a full-blown asthma attack, but we kept the puffers he was prescribed for a couple of years after that "just in case". He was old enough to remember how terrified he was, and I think if he ever had experienced that inability to breathe again it might have led him down a path similar to what this child has experienced. I agree that this child may need a professional evaluation, but she also needs to hear from her parents that they will treat her fears and feelings seriously, and reassure her that they will always provide her with whatever help she needs, and not be dismissive. The parent implies that the child is exaggerating or lying; if this is actually the case, then maybe it is a bid for attention and the parent needs to discuss "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" to help the daughter understand the seriousness of this.
