Ethnically Speaking, April 26

by Larry Meeks

Dear Larry: I was appalled to hear the hateful words that came out of the mouth of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama's former minister.

One of the things he said is Hillary never was called the N-word. Maybe not, but I'm pretty sure she has been called a whole lot worse. Words of any kind, when they are used to inflict emotional harm on a person, do hit harder than fists.

He mentioned that all whites have it a whole lot easier, socially and economically, than blacks. I woul ...

Nice job Larry, I grew up a lower middle class white child who was subject to oppression and abuse going to a mostly black grade school. I could tell you some horrible tales that my six siblings and I endured being the minority. We all survived and have become productive, happy people (3 of whom are in mixed marriages). It's interesting that I do not blame my abusers and that I still look at individuals for what they do and who they are beyond the color of their skin. Thank you for emphasing that we all need to look forward and be proactive about what can be and have compassion for but not focus on what was. Here's to Hope! Ava

Larry, you truly inspire hope in this nation. I recently to a college U.S. History class and was shocked with the way we treated the Native Americans. In grade schools they sugar coat much of it. I know slavery was bad also. I wish that part can be erased also. Today we fight in justice with gang killings, rape, child molestations, child killings, armed robbery, the list is too long. What will people say a hundred years from now when they read are horrible past? Every generation has a cross to bare in some way or another. Our focus should be on our society today and how we can help the victims of crime, sexual assault, or soldiers who kill for a unjust cause, the armed robber who kills a pregnant woman and kills her twins. Are we to blame for the horrible acts that we see everyday? I'm trying to help change things here in the U.S. by becoming a Social worker, my goal is to help the many children who are in foster care and are up for adoption, who have parents that are not all that great. It's the future generations that are suffering right now. Child abuse and neglect is something this generation has to own up to. The cycle is vicious and we must change it one way or another. Peace be with you Larry and to your readers, Peace be with the U.S. and with the world. Deb
