Doctor? Mother? A Personal Choice

Dear Margo: I have a 26-year-old sister who was halfway through medical school before she decided to drop out and have two children. Initially, my family was shocked and angry, as she did not reveal her pregnancy until her first baby was born — but like most families, we've come to respect and support her decision.

I, however, am still puzzled over why she did such an unimaginable thing. My sister graduated at the top of her class from a top-tier college and aspired to be a neuro ...

Please, I would like to comment on the letter from "String Theoriest." From reading the letter, I get the feeling she and her parents wanted to have a doctor in the family to brag about. Calling her decision to drop out and become a stay home mom "an unimaginable thing" was nasty. They were only thinking of themselves, nobody else. She doesn't say who was paying for all this education. If the family was paying for it, sure, it would've nice if the daughter had talked to them about it first. But even if they weren't, the daughter probably knew how they'd react and that's why she didn't tell them in advance.

I'm not trying to be judgemental, but I don't see a mention of "My sister dropped out to get married and have kids." Or any mention of Sister being married. Perhaps that's part of the problem?
