Do You Really Want To Drive in Maine?

by Jennifer Merin

Before you motor off to your holiday destination, take a look at the National Motorists Association's list of places where you're likely to encounter overly aggressive traffic enforcement.

Most often that means places where cops lurk beyond curves in the road, waiting to give you tickets for speeding. Locals know where they're stationed, but tourists don't. Use NMA's list to plan an itinerary that avoids speed traps.

That's not to say that going faster than the posted speed limi ...

Yes, I DO want to drive in Maine! I'm from Massachusetts, and my husband and I go up to Maine often. We got married in York Beach nearly eight years ago, and have been going on various Maine vacations ever since...from Kittery up to Moosehead Lake. We feel FAR safer driving in Maine than we do in Massachusetts, and perhaps it is thanks to the aggressive cops who go after those who are breaking the law. Sorry, but I gotta side with the cops on this one. You probably DID pass illegally. I don't know where in Ogunquit you were driving, but on Route One, up through Wells, at least, they have some right-turn only lanes, as well as lanes in the middle of the road designed for drivers on either side to use for turning left. These are NOT passing lanes, and it IS illegal to use them as such. Passing on the right is illegal in general, in any state. As Massachusetts residents, we resent the high insurance premiums we are forced to pay...mostly because we are forced to subsidize the many bad drivers in our state. My husband and I are both over 40, have clean driving records, have never gotten so much as a speeding ticket, certainly have never caused any accidents. If we lived in Maine, we'd be paying HALF of what we are here, for the exact same amount of coverage. If the guy who shook his fists at you was a Mainer, maybe he was just sick of tourists who break laws, and perhaps cause HIS insurance rates to rise. I can't say I blame the guy. Massachusetts people are well-known for being notoriously bad drivers. If you broke a law and have MA plates on your car (you don't say where you're from), of course people are gonna get upset. But we're not the stereotypical MA drivers; as I said, we are careful to obey the speed and other laws, never pass on the right OR left in a *turn-only* lane. We spend a lot of time up in Maine, including those evil places like Kittery, Ogunquit and Portland, and have yet to be busted by any cop. We're planning to move to Maine within the next few years, probably to Portland. We feel safer driving there, and we'll save a fortune on our car insurance. Thanks in part to the cops who work harder than those in MA to keep the roads safer and prevent accidents.
