You might want to check a fact in your column. In your post you refer to US Airways' $2 fee for soft drinks. US Airways has reversed this policy and soft drink have returned to being complimentary in economy class.

Also, like America West, Southwest Airlines lured Texas business travellers with the promise of free liquor during the 1970s. This marketing was widely known and was a direct attempt to snag Braniff's inter-Texan passengers.
