Annie's Mailbox®, February 26

by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar

Dear Annie: I am a college student, and I live with my boyfriend, who just lost his job. He's actively looking for a new one, but hasn't had any luck yet.

As much as I enjoy my newfound "grown-up" life, I find it very hard to survive financially. I work full time and go to school in the evenings until midnight. This is for juggling finances, if this individual is living on her own even though she has to use her parents information on the student loan forms she can then file an appeal in order to get her loans deferred until she graduates. Juggling really needs to speak to the financial aid rep at her college and fine out about scholarships and stafford loans. i also went to a private college so I do know this is possible.

I wonder if the mother of three is as stressed out as the college student? The absolutely best thing she can do, as you suggested, is talk with her doctor about a referral to a mental health program. There is one in our city that offers therapy from social workers, especially trained for this work, with medication from a psychiatrist who monitors your progress. They have evening hours and a sliding scale of charges. It is cruel and inhuman for her spouse to ignore or laugh at her when she is drowning. I wonder if he thinks the way she behaves is funny or is enjoying watching her suffer because she is mean to him, too? Whatever the reason, he owes her support because she is his wife and the mother of his children. He should be ashamed.

This is for Broke in Phoenix whos boyfriend had lost his job and she was struggling to pay her bills. I just wanted to make a few suggestions for the boyfriend. I work in the office of a temporary staffing agency and most agency's will help anyone find emplyment on a short notice. The boyfriend may not find the dream job he is looking for but he will have a paycheck to help with the rent until he can find a permanent job. There are staffing agencys in most every major city and I am sure he can find something.
