A Walk In The Clods

by Amy Alkon

This co-worker guy, who I hardly know, has been stalking me at work. I don't want to cause trouble for him, but...he's creepy. He's been asking co-workers about me and finding me on my breaks. Today, as I was leaving for lunch, he said, "I haven't stopped thinking about you." The hairs on my neck stood up. The shower music from "Psycho" came into my head!! I (like an idiot) said, "Shoot me an e-mail." (I don't have the guts to tell him, "Screw off, you ugly, ...

Without knowing all the details, I might be inclined to tell the LW to give the guy a chance, but on the other hand, we tell women to "trust their instincts." If this guy gives her the creeps, she needs to politely discourage him, or she may find him lurking outside her door in the middle of the night. Of course, even if she does discourage him, if he's got a fantasy world with her as a key player all built up in his head, he may still continue to lurk around. She may need to find another place to work.

Amy's advice in the first letter is spot-on. The writer reminds me of countless hypersensitive women I've met who are constantly fretting about feeling "threatened" by innocent males just being themselves. I really (seriously) enjoyed the part where the writer is given a good dressing-down for not having enough spine to politely discourage him, especially when it's clear he's trying very hard to get her attention and she hasn't been direct. As a man, I have grown tired of women who led me on like this, with phrases like, "Shoot me an email" instead of being direct enough to get across that I was wasting my time. I don't do well with subtlety and it doesn't sound like this guy does either. Personally, I think she ought to just give him a chance and actually go out with him once! What does she have to lose?
