There is a generally accepted notion in this country that if you don't own a home, you're pretty much a loser -- that if you rent your home, you are not experiencing the American dream. And that is simply not true.

Amen! Thank goodness someone finally recognizes that ownership isn't everything! My wife and I currently rent, and nearly every person who becomes aware of this fact feels the need to lecture us about how much we need to buy. I have had to start telling people, in no uncertain terms, what will happen to the next person who tells us, "You're flushing money down the toilet." Aside from this phrase (always exactly the same), we are always told that we can get a mortgage for what we're paying in rent. When I ask, "What about insurance? Home owners' association fees? Property tax? Furnishing? Maintenance?" the response is ususally, "Umm... well..." This is not to say we will never own, but not in the area in which we currently live, and not until we've paid down our debt.
