I managed an office where employees had paid sick leave. They came in when they were sick anyway. Some wanted to save their paid days off for fun things like days at the beach. Others thought their conscientiousness in coming in when they were sick would win them points. I finally reached the point where I'd send people home when they came in sick. Once, I made the boss go home.

It's not just need for pay that makes people go out when they're sick. They may have tickets to an event, and don't want to lose the money. Or they just feel like doing something. People rationalize that if something is going around, others will be exposed in any case. This is a very narcissistic culture--there's great resistance to the idea of consideration for others.

Anne W. said about all there is to be said regarding the subject. We have sired a society where no one really cares about their fellow workers.

The biggest problem I have with getting laid up in bed is that the television makes me sicker.
