The answer to supporting those who are morbidly obese, is not only fairly simple but less expensive for the American people. Consider obesity as a treatable disease, include obesity surgery insurance coverage in standard insurance policies. The savings over repeated doctor visits to treat co-morbidities like, heart disease, arthritis, sleep apnea, breathing difficulties, depression, diabetes, chronic pain, etc., would be enormous! As one who suffers, I know I have spent thousands in the last ten years, and my insurance company even more. My quality of life is abysmal. The cost of appropriate counseling and surgery are not covered or so minimally covered that I cannot overcome the problem simply from a financial prospective. I am currently going into debt to see a therapist to do the necessary emotional work. Surgical support is something I may never have. The reality is, my life expectancy is limited as a result. The attitude of critical judgment and ignorance about this issue may well cost my life, as well as the lives of thousands like me.
