LW1: If your first thought about a tattooed girl is "Skank!" then you DO believe that every tattooed girl is a skank. Then you rationalize yourself into trying not to think that way because you know how stupid this belief really is. It doesn't prevent you from having this belief, though. I think girls with tattoos are well shot of you. For the record, I, personally, would never consider getting a tattoo because I can't help but imagine how awful it would look like on dry, age-spotted, wrinkled skin when I hit 75.

I'd never get a tattoo and think they are repulsive, but it's the way of the world right now. I remember when I got my ears pierced in the 60s. I felt very "in" and daring--I may have been the first girl in my class. Women hadn't been getting their ears pierced for 30 years, and now just about every woman has her ears done. Within a couple of years, I wasn't so different anymore. The tattoo fad will go away someday, and then, like Ariana said, women will have to deal with their sagging tats on aging skin.

I agree with the letter writer. I've never met a tattoo on anyone that l liked...and in the case of young women I think they're hideous. I would be fine with not seeing them on anyone, but I especially wish society would see tats on women as taboo. It doesn't matter what they're of, how well-done, or where located. Ugly. Period. I have trouble understanding why they're considered trendy and fashionable. As to whether they actually say anything about a woman's moral character - of course they don't - but the LW feels the way he does because of the reputation female tatoos have had down through the past few generations - making a woman look trashy and "easy." I don't blame him one bit for wanting to avoid women who have them. How big of a deal he chooses to make of this, is his business...a small "innocent" one probably isn't a good reason to pass on an otherwise great gal, but I know I personally would never date a girl who had them all over her arms and lower back, no matter what she was like inside. Every time she got undressed, my stomach would turn.

My hope is that this LW will make at least one girl think twice about getting herself tattooed. If enough men speak out about this, the single women will probably stop doing it.

My tattoos are my a**hole meter--if you don't like me you see my tats, then you just saved me a lot of effort trying to figure out if you might be cool. I got my first tat at 19; and my most recent at 34. I don't regret any of them, and see them as a roadmap of where I've been. My tats are semi-visible (ie. can be covered with clothing, but most often are not; and never are intentionally).
The only thing they keep me from is wasting my time on losers who think all women with tattoos are skanks.

LW1: If I'd known that a tattoo would scare off the jerks this effectively, I'd have gotten one when I was 18 and put it in a visible place like my wrist. Would have saved me a lot of trouble.
