by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar

Dear Annie: My soon-to-be 17-year-old son has been caught smoking pot several times in the past few years. He also recently became very close to a girl we don't care for. She smokes pot as well, and I have reason to believe he may be sexually active with her. We have grounded him, taken away privileges, pushed him into drug counseling and other things, but as soon as he earns his freedom, he goes back to the same poor choices.

The Mom who wrote about her son smoking pot said: "He gets reasonably good grades and is always polite to adults so they think he's a great kid." It's too bad the Mom doesn't seem to think he's a great kid!!! I smoked pot in High School.......I stopped for a long time after I turned 18 due to fear of arrest...........now I'm almost 50 and have recently started again with a medical card allowing me to do so. I never went to college but due to my mother's training, I am a multi-millionaire, living in Hawaii and very happily married!!! My friend's parents thought I too was a "great kid." It's a shame that marijuana has a "stigma" about it due to the huge amount of our tax dollars being spent to discredit it. Alcohol and cigarettes do far more damage than marijuana.....unless of course you're caught and thrust into the criminal "justice" system. Still., I would not wish a return to "Prohibition" of alcohol. That only encourages criminal activity and consquently the violence that goes along with it. Peace & Aloha, Alan
