James isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, or the sharpest tool in the shed, or the brightest bulb in the fixture. I never heard of anyone being called not "the brightest cookie in the shed", Tolleridge. How did you come up with that saying?

My guess is Tolleridge wants to sound brighter than James :-P
Poor little James' is not so stupid, he's supposed to be a lot younger than Ruthie, and Ruthie, bless her, is exceedingly intelligent for her age, as we all know. That's what makes the contrast so strong. Moreover, James is supposed to be from a -mildly speaking- less than encouraging background.
His naïeve ways mainly make him more endearing to me.
I can't wait to hear Ruthie's paper about him...
