Froma Harrop is an independent voice on politics, economics and culture. Though generally left-of-center, she is known for her unconventional approach and libertarian streak. The conservative Heartland Institute has called her its "favorite lefty."

Born in New York City, Harrop was raised in the Long Island suburbs. After graduating from New York University, she worked on the financial desk at Reuters Ltd., covering business and the Federal Reserve. She later became a financial editor for The New York Times News Service. Harrop divides her time between New York City and Providence, Rhode Island.
