Your Friend Is Engaged to a Louse

Share Comment

DR. WALLACE: Janet and I are best friends and have been for over 10 years. We are both 20. Janet is engaged to Tom, and they are planning to get married in five months. I'm going to be her maid of honor. Last night, I was over at Janet's house and Tom was there. At 9 pm, Janet's mom called and told Janet to pick her up at work. Janet asked Tom and me if we wanted to ride along. I said no because I had to go home and Tom declined because he wanted to watch a television show.

After Janet left, Tom started to get aggressive with me. He put his arm around my waist and tried to kiss me. I pulled away and asked him what was wrong with him. He told me that I turned him on. I was shocked and left the house immediately.

At this moment, I'm truly troubled. Janet is a wonderful girl, and I love her as a sister. Should I keep quiet about Tom or should I break her heart and tell her what happened? Personally, I think Tom is a loser, but I have never said anything to Janet about my feelings. Also, it's possible that Janet might not believe me, and that could cause us to end our friendship. What should I do? - Nameless, Centralia, Wash.

NAMELESS: Tom has put you in a terrible predicament. You have no choice but to tell Janet what happened. Unfortunately, she may, as you fear, not want to hear what you have to say and respond with anger instead of gratitude. You need to take that risk.

She's engaged to a louse — far worse is to be married to one!

MY DAD HATES MY BEST FRIEND'S PARENTS

DR. WALLACE: I'm 13 and so is my best friend Sally. My parents both work until 5 pm, so my mom has me go to Sally's house after school, and she picks me up there. My mom pays Sally's mom $25 weekly. It's not like she is baby-sitting because Sally and I usually go to her room to talk, listen to music and do homework.

My dad found out that Sally's parents are atheists and since my parents are church people, my dad wants my mother to quit her job, so she will be home when school is out. He thinks that atheists are creeps. He hates them. I know that you cannot change my dad's opinion of atheists, but I would like to hear what you think about not going to Sally's house any more. He also wants me to stop being Sally's friend. - Nameless, Talladega, Ala.

NAMELESS: Your father needs to put into practice the things he learned, or should have learned, at church — about "loving thy neighbor." His belligerent intolerance is likely to have only one effect: driving his daughter away from his church. It's natural for those who are "church people" to disagree with the philosophy of atheists, but to hate them is unacceptable.

Dad's insiting Mom quit her job to be a stay at home parent? If Dad wants his daughter watched by only a Christian after school hours why doesn't he quit HIS job instead of insiting Mom quit hers?
I'm thinking Dad is a narrow minded, sexest, religious fanatic with control issues.
