Love Is the Key to Successful Parenting
DR. WALLACE: I am a single parent of an 11-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old son. I had a lot of problems as a teen because my parents were super lenient in controlling me. Let's say I could do almost anything that I wanted with no questions asked.…Read more.
Give Intelligent Young Women a Break
DR. WALLACE: I'm angry that you encourage all girls, even the mentally, emotionally and physically mature young women who happen to be teenagers, not to get involved with older guys. You are dead wrong in your assumption that older guys and teenage …Read more.

You are the Honor Student, Your Sister is the CheerleaderDR. WALLACE: As a former high-school principal, you should be well aware that cheerleaders are among the most popular students in school. On the other hand, not all high-school students in the National Honor Society are very popular. Let's say your daughter could be a cheerleader or a member of the National Honor Society. Which would you choose? Be honest. I'm writing because I'm either a cheerleader or in the Honor Society. My sister is also a cheerleader or an honors student, but only one of us is a cheerleader. — Nameless, Portland, Ore. NAMELESS: For the record, I think you are the honors student and your sister is the cheerleader. And I'm positive you know I am going to choose intelligence over popularity — and you are 100-percent correct. But during my principal days at Garden Grove (Calif.) High School, I recall several cheerleaders who were also members of the Honor Society. YOUR FRIEND IS ON HER OWN WITH YOUR EX DR. WALLACE: I was dating a guy for over three months. We broke up because he was disrespectful to me. Well, now the guy is dating my best friend and she barely has time to talk to me. I told her this guy was going to hurt her, but she won't listen.
NAMELESS: You have given your friend fair warning. Do nothing more. DAUGHTER'S LIVE-IN BOYFRIEND IS A USELESS BUM DR. WALLACE: Our 19-year-old daughter has two children. Her live-in boyfriend, who is a useless bum in my opinion, is unfortunately the father of both children. Our daughter put our family's last name on the birth certificate of both babies, but now she wants to change that legally to have the father's last name replace our family's last name. I'm livid that she wants to do this because I despise this guy. Your response will be appreciated. — Mother, Davenport, Iowa MOTHER: I understand where you are coming from, but it's your daughter who must have the final say on the names of her children. Don't hassle her about this. She has a difficult task ahead and doesn't need this debate to add to her burden. Dr. Robert Wallace welcomes questions from readers.
