Yearly, 7,000 Lives Are Saved DR. WALLACE: I'd like to know why we have a stupid law in the United States that requires a person to reach age 21 before legally consuming a drop of alcohol. I am a college freshman at Miami University in Florida and if I have a glass of wine at …Read more. Outside Lockers Save School Money DR. WALLACE: Lately, someone has been breaking into student lockers and stealing things. Sometimes I leave expensive things in my locker, and I would be very upset if they were stolen. But if they were, would the school be responsible to reimburse …Read more. Tell Your Friend the Bad News DR. DR. WALLACE: I totally disagree with you when you told a boy to ditch his friends who smoke, drink and do drugs. My friends also smoke, drink and do drugs, and I've been friends with them for a long time. I also happen to not smoke, drink or do drugs.

I was taught not to judge people by what you see but rather what's inside. I hate what my friends are doing, but I'm not about to desert them. My parents are aware of my friends' habits, and they don't mind my hanging around them because they don't want to choose my friends. - Nameless, Oakland, Calif.

NAMELESS: I agree that parents should not choose friends for their teens, but they should stop them from hanging around with teens they disapprove of. I would not allow my teens to hang with friends who do drugs and drink. The odds are high that they will start doing the same.

Remember, I was a principal at a Southern California high school with a student body of over 3,000, so I had plenty of opportunities to observe teenagers. If I learned anything, it was that birds of a feather do, indeed, flock together.

Make sure your mother and father have the opportunity to read your email and my response.

AVOCADOS ARE GOOD FOOD

DR. WALLACE: I love avocados. I also watch my weight. I've read that avocados are high in calories and contain a lot of fat. Ugh! Should I stop eating them? I didn't know that fruits and vegetables contain fat. - Sarah, Santa Fe, N.M.

SARAH: Fresh fruits and vegetables have negligible amounts of fat.

The lone exception is the avocado, which contains 325 calories and about 31 grams of fat. But avocados are rich in vitamin A and other important nutrients and should not be eliminated from a well-balanced diet.

ONCE GRADES SLIP, DROP THE JOB

DR. WALLACE: I'm in the 12th grade and plan to attend college after high school. I get good grades and have an above-average IQ. My grade point average after my junior year was 3.50. That means I averaged half A's and half B's.

This school year, I got a part-time job at a fast-food restaurant. I really need the money to help support my owning a car. With gas prices and insurance out of sight, I need to work part-time or my car will have to sit in the garage.

My grades have slipped this year. I'm averaging all B's, which is a 3.00 GPA. This shouldn't be a big deal because my overall GPA will only drop slightly. But my dad is forcing me to give my notice to quit because of this slight drop in my grades. I don't think this is reasonable. A college won't dump me because of this. Please give me your thoughts. - Nameless, Rochester, N.Y.

NAMELESS: I have a standard answer for similar letters. Part-time jobs are an asset as long as grades are not compromised. Once grades start to slip, the part-time job should be terminated. In other words, your dad is right.
