Love Is the Key to Successful Parenting
DR. WALLACE: I am a single parent of an 11-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old son. I had a lot of problems as a teen because my parents were super lenient in controlling me. Let's say I could do almost anything that I wanted with no questions asked.…Read more.
Give Intelligent Young Women a Break
DR. WALLACE: I'm angry that you encourage all girls, even the mentally, emotionally and physically mature young women who happen to be teenagers, not to get involved with older guys. You are dead wrong in your assumption that older guys and teenage …Read more.
Open and Honest Conversation Is Paramount
DR. WALLACE: Please tell me what to do. I'm 20, married three years and the mother of a 2-year-old son. I love my husband very much, but I'm lonely and depressed. My husband works 12 to 16 hours, 6 days a week. I have no friends, no job and no time …Read more.
My Friend's Mother Helps Her Cheat
DR. WALLACE: We have homework four days a week in world history. I do all my homework by myself, but my best friend's mother helps her with hers. I average a B on my homework, but my friend averages an A. I don't believe this is fair. Both of us are …Read more.

Let Her Go and Get on With Your LifeDR. WALLACE: My girlfriend broke up with me recently because she said she needed her space. She thought I was "smothering" her. I love this girl very much and breaking up was hard on me. We are both 17. Last week, I wrote her a letter telling her how I felt and used death as an analogy for my pain. Well, she took it as a suicide note. I have no thought of doing such a thing. But she called and said she was sorry I was hurting and she prayed I wouldn't commit suicide. Then she added that she no longer wanted to communicate with me either by talking or writing. What should I do? I really love this girl and I want her back. Do you think she ever will come back? — Nameless, Alameda, Calif. NAMELESS: I doubt it. Indeed, I would say there is an absolute certainty she won't come back as long as you hold onto such intense feelings about her. That's why she felt smothered in the first place. Let her go and get on with your life. Get involved. Join school clubs and activities. You might even want to consider volunteering somewhere in your community. AIM AT THE FAT MIDDLE-CLASS CATS DR. WALLACE: Why are you always preaching to teens to stop driving when drinking? Sure, a few do drink and drive, but the vast majority of drunken drivers are middle-age, middle-class flunkies who don't give a darn about anything but their own satisfaction. Wise up, Dr. Wallace. If you really want to keep drunken drivers off our streets, then aim your words to the fat, middle-class cats. — Maria El Paso, Texas MARIA: Driving drunk is a serious violation no matter what the driver's age, but if you think the typical drunken driver is a middle-aged fat cat, then think again.
I FEEL SLEEPY WHEN STUDYING DR. WALLACE: I'm a high-school junior and work after school from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. I need the money to help pay for my college education. By the time I get home and eat supper, it's nearly 7:30. Then I study for two to three hours. I'm an honors student and have good grades. I want to keep my grades high. My problem is that I get tired after about an hour of studying. My mom told me to take a warm shower and that would help. I've tried this, but it didn't help. Can you offer some good advice? Don't tell me to quit my job because that's out of the question. — Katelyn, Dixon, Ill. KATELYN: Mom means to be helpful, but she gave you the wrong information. Warm baths and showers induce sleep, and that's what you're trying to avoid. What you need is a cool shower. It's a refreshing and stimulating study break; it will be incredibly invigorating for even the most tired, study-clogged brain. Give it a try. It works!
